God Promises to direct our steps through the Holy Spirit that dwells in us, but do we listen?
I count my steps every day, well honestly – most days, oops – some days. My goal is 10,000 steps a day. I have control over whether I meet my goal or not. Some days I am successful and some days not. Early in my career I also attempted to count the steps it would take to move up the career ladder, social ladder, and life’s ladder. I read Proverbs 16:9 time and time again but felt that my success rested on the amount of work I put in, selecting my own steps and direction. I wish my Pastor, the books I read, and the conversations I held would have clarified what this scripture meant in practical terms.
Practically speaking, I would have met with our Lord (in prayer), who is more than a mentor, and asked for guidance about my selection and will to succeed. I would have begun to understand that my will would have taken a back seat to God’s Will for my life. I would have learned that His Will and His Promises were pertinent to my life’s journey.
It was more than once that God led me in one direction, but I chose another only to find myself back at the same point until I ‘got it’ and accepted God’s Will and His direction for my life. Intuitively I knew that God determined my steps, but was too headstrong to accept it. The grass looked greener elsewhere. I now know that I was caught in the principality war.
Through (intentionally) studying the Bible, I learned that the Book of Proverbs was written to direct our daily living and shift us from relying on our own free-will to the Lord’s Will, allowing Him to govern our steps.
How many of us have taken the circuitous route to find that it was, in some respect a circular route, leading us back to the platform we climbed steps to reach, only to find we were on the wrong platform and the steps we chose were not planned by our Lord and Savior?
BibleGateway.com, NIV, New Bible Commentary puts it this way, “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
