I wish I understood the context of spiritual fear when I was young. I always rejected the idea of being afraid of the Lord, but was never taught or sought to understand it means reverence, standing in awe of, and recognizing His power and might.
There are instances in the Bible were fear meant to be afraid, but that was Old Testament vengeance. We live in the New Testament dispensation and God promised He would no longer smite or destroy.
Truly the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Wisdom is the principle thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7 NIV
The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Reflect on what I (Paul) am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 2 Timothy 2:7
This is the premise for our growing relationship with the Lord.
Understanding the Word and having the wisdom to apply it in our lives, and obedience to the Lord is the value believers can count on more than gold.
For indeed the gospel was preached to us (believers) as well as to them (non-believers); but the Word which they heard did not profit them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. This is the distinguishing factor.
Hebrews 4:2 NIV
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Jesus Christ to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV
We are to trust in the Lord and His understanding, not our own. Proverbs 3:5
Once we awakened through reverence and faith we know the Lord is our rock, our fortress, and our deliver. We know our God is our rock, in whom we take refuge, our shield, and the horn of our salvation. Through our reverence for the Lord we find comfort in knowing that only He is our stronghold. (Paraphrased – Psalms 18:2 NIV)
Amen!
