We Live in Spiritual Warfare Terrain, AKA the Battleground

good fight4

Many people live in physical warfare throughout the world, but all Christians, 100% of us, live in spiritual warfare terrain. Spiritual Warfare is real and exists on the spiritual plane, the second heaven to be exact. The second heaven is Satan’s headquarters. The war is over the dominion of our soul. The battle (spiritual conflict) is between God and Satan, the fallen angel.

We should not take this lightly. Our soul is at stake. God gave us free-will, the liberty to choose our path. We have the option to follow God, obey the Word and depend on Him, choosing to abide in His Will and develop Christ-like characteristics defined in Galatians or live in the natural, mimicking Satan’s destructive traits.

Some will tell you Satan has been defeated through the cross and that is true. But it is also true that Satan is the father of the earth and all that is in it. He will continue to try to dominate us until Christ returns. In short, the war rages on, the battle is ours. Recently I visited Europe and visited several castles. The one thing that stood out was the fact that different nations conquered different countries, in a back and forth manner. One country captured a nation for hundreds of years and then the original monarchy regained it. The castles were renovated with each victory and were thus a collaboration of all captors.

Man is much like the castles, we assume Satan’s traits because we are born as sinners. We are freed when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We vacillate between good and evil. We display the characteristics of Christ and Satan’s destructive traits depending upon our circumstances. When we falter and take on destructive traits, we are losing the war for our soul.

Satan desires to prevent us from being born again. He works to infiltrate our mind, memories, will, and emotions. He tries to bring sickness, disease, and infirmity upon us. (Spiritual Warfare. Piscopo. pp 27)

John wrote that God desires us to prosper and be in good health even as our soul prospers. If we want to have good physical and spiritual health, we must fight for it. Satan is constantly attacking us when we are awake as well as asleep.

The battle is ours.

The Book of Ephesians, chapter six informs us to wear the Armor of God, why? We are in a battle and Paul described the spiritual war in likeness to a Roman battle and the armor the soldiers wore to protect themselves.

Ephesians 6:11-17 instructs us to:

11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Once we put on the armor, we are instructed to pray because prayer is our defensive tool. God’s Word covers us, informs us and directs us. Ephesians 6:10 implores us to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. And verse eighteen instructs us to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. Be alert and always keep on praying.

Charles Stanley cautions that we always need to be ready for potential battle. Because we simply do not know when or where the devil is going to strike. We cannot be lulled into thinking that because everything is fine today, everything will be automatically fine tomorrow. The devil never gives up trying to defeat us. He is always looking for our blind side and our weak moments to attack. Stanley continues expressing that we cannot wait until the battle is waged to put on our armor because at that point we are at a disadvantage. We must live in our armor. (Paraphrased, pp 139)

To this end, we are always to remain alert, in slumber and when we are active. We remain active through prayer, praise, and worship. We should put on the Armor every morning and pray for protection as we sleep. When we pray we should implore the Name of Jesus, which is one of our strongest weapons.

I have found that as I read and study the Bible, God is able to speak to me more directly through the Word. I better understand His directions. When Satan attacks in my sleep, the context of the scriptures enter my spiritual lips and cast the attacks as far as the east is from the west. Spiritual warfare requires practice and drills much like those in the armed forces. We must reach the point when our studies become our practice. The rules become spiritual stockpiles and our actions become offensive and defensive weapons as needed.

The battle is ongoing, we are in a war. We have the spiritual authority granted by God himself to be His foot soldiers. We must make the decision to learn how to use the Word of God to effectively defeat the wiles of the evil one.
