Refraction of Light

I am in my kitchen and saw light refractions in the family room this morning. My thoughts immediately focused on the wonderment of God. Just think if you are given the challenge to build a community, universe, house, or garden you begin with your vision, jot down what you want to include in the project, draw a rough draft, review it and then begin to draw the specs.

Most people will overlook some aspect of designing, maybe minute, maybe something major. Hopefully, the oversight or error will not be calamitous, like the Millennium Towers, a multi-million residential complex in San Francisco, California.

We are just humans, and then there is God, the maker of the universe. He created the universe in six days. Everything that ever existed was created on a timetable and exact in its measurements. Nothing was left to folly.

Thus, looking at the refractions on the ceiling and walls caused me to pause and thank God for His creation. Light refraction is science in real time and part of His work. We hear scientists say that science is science and God is God, and science, not God explains the universe and the development thereof. The fact is, science is not independent of God; science exists because of God.

It was a difficult path I took to move from science and Darwinism to knowing that God is the creator of the universe and all that exists in it, those things we know about and those things yet to be discovered. It was equally difficult to accept that God is all-knowing, omniscient. He is all-powerful, omnipotent. He is everywhere, omnipresent; God knows all that was, is, and will occur in our existence. But, once you are saved and your eyes are opened, you know, that you know, that you know. What do you know? You know the truth. There is nothing, and no one mightier than God, our Lord, and Savior.

Truth John 8-32

This is the day of the mysteries of God. The day of His revelations. God knows our challenges and the consequences of our designs before they happen. He sees our flaws and the wonderment that they entail. He sees our paths and promises never to forsake us or leave us to our own accord. He provides our GPS through the Holy Spirit. He gives us sight to view the refractions of light and darkness in our lives, and a lens to explore the possibilities of our discoveries and development of our own making. He gave us the authority to be ‘designers’ to plan the world around us. I’m certain he hoped that through free-will we would choose to protect the planet, universe, our lives and the lives of humanity, but He knows He gave Satan the earth, hence the home of destruction and chaos, with moments of calm. To this extent, it seems we have failed to advance the Kingdom, but as with everything, He accounted for our failure to universally recognize Him as Lord and Savior and ended His work defined in the Book of Revelation.

All of my thoughts came pouring out because I looked up and saw refraction of light dancing on my ceiling. God is beyond amazing; there are no words to define His ability to orchestrate our being. There is a song; God is an Awesome God. The title is an appropriate description and one within our context of incomprehensible.

Refraction of light is of God’s making. God’s light passes through an interface of one medium and another. His light transcends the medium of carnality (Satan’s earth) and resides in us through His Word.

I Need God’s APPROVAL

I was reading the Bible App (bible.com, YouVersion) and came across the daily devotional. The image shared Galatians 1:10, HCSB version.

The HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible) version of Galatians 1:10, last sentence, reads, “I would not be a slave of Christ.” I do not believe this is correct. A slave does not decide to be a follower. A slave is ordered to follow. God gave us free-will. Free-will negates the command to follow. Following Christ is a life-choice.

If the HCSB version implies being tied to Christ, the phrase may fit. But again, it is not a life-choice; it is an imposition.

I much prefer the versions which read, “I would not be a servant or bond-servant of Christ.”

Becoming a servant of Christ means relinquishing who we are, with who we want to become. Our purpose in life is to become like Christ. We choose to become like Christ by loving our neighbors and spreading the Good Word. We spread the Good Word through our voice, as well as our actions and deeds. Our actions and deeds should mirror Christs’ character. Though we struggle, making these changes in our life will help us become servants of Christ and relinquish trying to please others as our goal in life.

Focus On Today, It Is Enough

When we pray, we should begin the day knowing God meets all of our needs. If we know this to be the truth, then our focus will be on the victory, the successes, and not the circumstances that prevail around us. Our strength is in knowing God will lead us, comfort us, and carry us when we are weak. 

We can stop worrying because He promised to take care of all of our needs. Seek His Kingdom first. 

“But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right–the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also. “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Worried and Troubled About Many Things

“And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.”

How many of us stay busy because we believe it means we are doing the Lord’s work? I can raise my hand, guilty as charged. Luke 10 is about two sisters, Martha and  Mary. The two women learned that Jesus was going to visit their home. This immediately set an expectation that they had to ready the house, at least that is what Martha thought. On the other hand, Mary thought – what an opportunity. When he arrived, she perched herself at Jesus’ foot breathing in His every word, loving the feeling of his presence. Depending upon where we are in life, we will become a Martha or Mary. But, the Lord is not asking us to prepare things for or around him. The Lord does not want us to worry, or fret over the issues that surround us. He wants us to still ourselves, feel his love, and spend time in His Holy Presence.

Like Martha we become distracted. We lose sight of the purpose, our dependence upon the Lord, and our desire to listen to Him, learn the practicality of the Word and then share the Good News. But, we are not wholly Martha, we also embrace the wonderment of Mary, waiting to serve, listen and learn.

We are told in John 15, the Lord is the true vine and God is the vinedresser. The vine cannot bear fruit by itself. In other words, we cannot bear fruit by ourselves. Without sitting at the Lords’ feet, we will wither. We need to be still and listen, and not become distracted by the things around us. The scripture reads, “He who abides in Me, and I in him bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” The Holy Spirit must dwell in us. It is His blood that flows through our veins, our heart, and our soul. The scripture further shares, “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered. Mary scurried about during the visit reading the house, preparing a meal, and doing all of the ceremonial things. Her sister Mary wanted more of Jesus. She wanted to breathe Him in, be a student of his Word and spend as much time as possible with Him; food was not important, a clean home was not important, spending time at the foot of our Lord was all that mattered. She knew she would be stronger for it, that sharing her story about what she learned that day with others would bear fruit.

When we feel the urge to become busy rather than sit still, it is more than a tick, it is a red alert.

Mary and Martha clearly loved Christ; we can gain more from this story, we can look at this in the scope of Spiritual Warfare. When we feel the Mary-Martha tug, we should acknowledge that it is often the devil trying to distract us and delay us from spending time with the Lord. His purpose is to kill, steal,  and destroy. He wants to kill our relationship with the Lord, steal our time with the Lord and destroy our hope to reach heaven.

Like so many, I try to stay alert. I know spending time with the Lord every day is imperative, yet there are times when I become enveloped in the stuff around me. But as the scripture says, only one thing is needed, not the fluff and circumstance, only one thing, to spend quality time with the Lord.

In the end, we must ask ourselves when we are falling into oblivion, who do we belong to, where do we reside?  Do we respond to Jesus’ invitation like Martha or like Mary? Will we wither or bear fruit?

God’s Promises Strengthen Us For The Battle, Spiritual Warfare

My ongoing theme, Spiritual Warfare, stresses that we are in a constant battle with our sin nature directed by Satan. Satan is not the only reason we fall prey to our sin nature, though he is the author of it. We are God’s children. His dominion is superior to all others. He knew a battle would be waged against him, and to ensure that we know we are His, He placed the hidden treasure of eternity deep within our heart. When something is in our heart, we are aware of its existence and feel a great longing for the eternal life He has placed in us. Ecclesiastes 3:11 reaffirms our belief that God has set eternity deep in our hearts.

“God has made everything; as all things in creation are made by him, for his pleasure and glory, and all well and wisely, there is a beauty in them all: so all things in providence; he upholds all things; he governs and orders all things according to the counsel of his will; some things are done immediately by him, others by instruments, and some are only permitted by him; some he does himself, some he wills to be done by others, and some he suffers to be done; but in all there is a beauty and harmony; and all are ordered, disposed, and overruled, to answer the wisest and greatest purposes; everything is done in the time in which he wills it shall; be done, and done in the time most fit and suitable for it to be done; all things before mentioned, for which there is a time, and all others: all natural things are beautiful in their season; things in summer, winter, spring, and autumn; frost and snow in winter, and heat in summer; darkness and dews in the night, and light and brightness in the day.”

The knowledge of the existence of eternity is nestled in our heart. We will not know it until it is revealed. Now my question is since the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity and resides or dwells in us, is there any doubt that the Holy Spirit knows the secret about our eternity? I think not. While the Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity and aware of the hidden treasures, it is not His to share, “and though everything is beautiful in its time, until they are made manifest, and all viewed together; they will not be perfectly understood, or the beauty of them seen, ( Revelation 15:4 )”.

God promises us that the hidden treasure will be revealed. This scripture gives us the strength to fight the Good Fight of Faith, as Paul expressed, to continue the race. It empowers us to armor up every day and use our weapon, the Word, to share the Gospel and fight the spiritual war that rages all day every day.

Where is Your Focus?

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

This scripture spoke to my inner being, reminding me that I can get caught up in the things of this world if I do not stay vigilant. It is easy to allow our carnal man to prosper. All of our senses are tuned into the shiny things of this earth that are constantly bombarding us. We are in a constant state of warfare; tug and war. Our choices are this world or the heavenlies.

We need to stay in tune and shift our focus. The battle rages throughout our lives. God gave us the freedom to choose how we live our lives. Earlier in life, I decided that my purpose was to reach the Kingdom, this meant that I needed to make decisions to walk away from some things, refocus, and galvanize others. in short, reaching my spiritual destination is the focus of my life.

Our eternal goal relies on our contemplation, prayer, praise, and worship, which guides us and makes us better. When we replace the object of the goal, then the things we formerly worshiped become benefits of our work and not the object of our work.

I’ve learned that focusing on things, as the end-all, is a form of idol worship; things, such as a new outfit, car, new apartment, home, ultimate vacation, and career ascension,  are temporal and lose their value over time, my focus is acquiring eternal life in heaven.

As sinners, we cannot fall prey to delusion and the idols of this world. Satan will use everything available to prevent the gospel from shining, from politics to morals, to seemingly innocuous music. Between Satan and our sin nature, we are constantly battling to live in the spiritual realm, we must always stay alert, as Christians, must focus on the Word to avoid the traps of the evil one while demonstrating the virtues of Christ in our daily lives. Focusing on the Good News prepares us for our eternal life while living on earth. It makes us better people, spouses, parents, friends, and God’s helpers. Hold on to instruction, do not let it go, guard it well, for it is your life. Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it turn from it and go on your way. The path of the righteous is like the morning sun shining ever brighter till the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble. My son, pay attention to what I say turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the[a] paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
