We, humans, often spend more time dwelling on the past than focusing on the day or planning for the future.
Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. Genesis 19:26. He destroyed the city behind them and instructed them to move on, leave the past behind. All too often we are frozen in our past.
In Philippians 3:13, Paul said, “No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.”
Looking back to gain perspective, acknowledge wrongdoing to learn how to avoid it in the future is beneficial. Looking back to good memories is beautiful. Looking back to define who you once were is debilitating, and in some respects, you are no better off than Lot’s wife.
It is difficult to change how we perceive our life, no matter what our past offered, it is easier to stay in the muck and mire than forge into the unknown. The Egyptians cried out to the Lord, ”why did you bring us out to the desert to die?” Exodus 14:11. They were not focusing on the day and looking at how the day is preparing them for the promised land. The Israelites were only focusing on loss. Our hope is in today. Our faith equips us for the promised land, our tomorrow.
We should fight to release old characteristics that defined us, look to today and live the life the Lord provided for us. Honor God. Rely on Him. Define your life by who He says you are today, not who you were yesterday. Develop new habits, change your approach. Don’t give away your power to your past. Don’t live in the rearview mirror. Don’t look back for direction into the now and your future.
